ChromeOS/Cloud Computing – 2, Productivity Software

How to Use Office on a Chromebook

I use Office 365 for my writing. While the perfectly good Google office apps come pre-installed on most Chromebooks I have a personal preference for 365. I subscribe to Microsoft 365 personal for a fee of $79 CAD per year. This gives me access to all the office apps in Windows and online versions. In addition a subscription gives you a terabyte of cloud storage.

The 365 online apps are all very usable. I use Word most often and I am happy with it. The online version does not have all the features of the desktop version, but for most use case scenarios I think the online version is perfectly good. I used the online version to write during NaNoWriMo. The voice dictation feature works perfectly Word online. The file compatibility of Word online with the desktop version is perfect.

I am not a heavy PowerPoint or Excel user, but I have tried both on a Chromebook and they were fine for my purposes.

Other Office Tools

Teams and OneNote are also very usable on Chromebooks. Office 365 also include other apps and more are being added. The most interesting, useful, and recent addition is ClipChamp. ClipChamp is an online video editing tools. I used it to create a 30 minute video and was impressed. I have used desktop video editing tools before. If you are familiar with them then you will be able to use ClipChamp without trouble. If you are new to video editing the learning curve will be a little steeper, but I think you could learn everything you need to do in an afternoon.

Grammarly
I subscribe to Grammarly and this service works fine with the online Word app, not surprisingly because Grammarly is a cloud based service. (Grammarly also works with Google Docs.)

Google Office Apps

These are pre-installed on Chromebooks. The only Google app I use is the Google Keep note taking app. I love it and have installed it on my android phone. The ability to create notes on the fly and then use them on your computer is very handy.

One of the concerns many people have about Chromebooks is what to do if your are offline. Google apps can be configured to work offline, but this requires a small learning curve.

A text editor come pre-installed on Chromebooks and this is an option for word processing while you might be offline. This tool is a very traditional app that saves to internal storage by default.
